Beware of Global Escapes (www.global-escapes.net)
I don’t often go out of my way to tarnish the reputation of anyone. It’s just not something I generally have time to mess with. Global Escapes is an exception. I’ve actually been meaning to make this post for a few weeks now, but just haven’t had the time to sit down and write it out.
Shortly before the Christmas holiday, my wife got a phone call at the house. It was from someone at Wal-Mart’s HQ informing us that we had entered a drawing and been selected as the winner of some vacation. The Wal-Mart HQ thing was flag #1. To claim our prize, they wanted us to make travel arrangements through a local company called Global Escapes. We looked them up and they had an office in the nice side of town so that was a little comforting. My wife said the caller was a bit pushy about the whole ordeal and had our address wrong. The address they had was from a home we haven’t lived in for almost 3 years now. My wife proceeds to ask when we entered the drawing as we wouldn’t have put an old address down. The caller says it was right before easter of that year or the year before. This is flag #2. We wouldn’t have used an old address for a contest this year, last year, or even the year before. Furthermore, we don’t usually go to Wal-Mart.
After taking our details down and scheduling a time for us to come by the office, the caller kept repeating “You promise you are coming, right?” My wife was kind of taken back by this, but hesitantly confirmed that we would. After hanging up, she promptly called me to relay the conversation and details of the call.
I started doing a little research and took a look at the Global Escapes website, which actually has no vacation resources on it at all. Instead, there are links for Login, About, Downloads, etc. No mention of hotels, flights, etc on this so called Travel Agency website. After a little more digging, I came across several interesting pages online about this company including a less than stellar BBB report.
My discovery shined some light on exactly what Global Escapes did. They aren’t a Travel Agency and they specialize in selling vacation planning software that claims to save you thousands of dollars on your vacations. All of this, in exchange for some hefty cash. In essence, they are running a scam operation and using false pretenses to lure victims to the meetings.
Since we had the phone number for GE, I quickly called up and spoke to someone in Dallas that had a heavy foreign accent and informed him that we would not be attending the meeting and that we knew exactly what kind of scam they were running. The man spoke very slow in an effort to keep me on the phone and kept repeating himself and acting like he couldn’t understand what I was saying. After finally hanging up on him, I went ahead and called the Legal Dept at Wal-Mart HQ and informed them of the situation. I was informed that I was not the first caller to complain about Global Escapes using the Wal-Mart ploy to trick people. The woman at Wal-Mart thanked me for my time and informed me that I would not be hearing from Global Escapes again.
One thing stands out to me in this story aside from the red flags noted during the actual story. If Global Escapes was legit, and they aren’t, why would they need to lie to get me to come and do business with them? They have offices located nationwide so I suspect people all over the country are being duped into handing over large sums of money in exchange for what amounts to nothing.
In preparing for this post I did a little more searching and found that there is one legitimate company using the Global Escapes name. The scamming operation is currently housed at http://www.global-escapes.net while the legitimate agency, from what I can tell, is located at http://www.globalescapes.com
So if you happen to get a phone call about a contest from someone who is vague on the details or changes the story, you might want to be a little skeptical because it’s probably not true.

I think you have the wrong idea about global escapes now me personally i have been to the presentation and the calls are from marketing companies that have no idea what they are saying. As for the company as a whole it does excatly what it says it will do. Yes you pay an upfront cost and u gain access to the website to have the chance to stay in condos around the world for next to nothing. I bought the software and have been very please with the company and the software. I have traveled to mexico and stayed in a beautiful condo in cabo for 299 for the week. Also in orlando for 499 and in colorado spring break for 525 dollars. This is an amazing program and you should not knock if, if u never bought it
Hi Michelle,
I’m very happy that you enjoyed the GE program, but here is the main sticking point that makes it fall into the “scam” category for me.
#1 If your product is legitimate, why do you need to lie to me to sell it to me? Saying I won a contest at Wal-Mart for a free trip and then inviting me to come to a presentation? Not cool at all.
Tell me Michelle, what kind of up front cost did you have to shell out to save a few hundred bucks for a week in cabo? $5k? $10k?
The bottom line is that Global Escapes may have a completely legit business model, but they act shady and have far too many cases of appearing to mislead customers. That said, they are classified as a scam in my book and I’ll gladly steer anyone away from them as quickly as I can.
One last question… you don’t work for Global Escapes by any chance do you?
Chris,
Thank you for your post!! You are dead-on with your assessment of this company. I wish I had done my due diligence before my run-in with Global Escapes in Eden Prairie, MN a few years ago.
These guys actually dropped off my radar for a long time because they quit bugging me after I canceled my membership in writing. All of a sudden, just like a nasty virus…they’re back.
I got a bill today for $199. The message says, “This statement is for renewal fees for your vacation club.” I suspect this is not actually a bill, but rather, an attempt to get me to reinstate my membership by simply paying the $199, thinking it’s a legitimate bill. Clever, huh?
Incidentally, when I went through my daily disputes with the company trying to cancel this membership, the contact’s name was Michelle. Coincidence? You be the judge.
I have been dealing with these criminals for years. I attended a presentation at Global Escapes years ago in Eden Prairie MN. I noticed all the red flags and did not buy, or even waste my money trying to claim the fake prizes. I then went on a website and told people to watch out for these scam artists. I thought that was then end of it, but then I started getting threats from these people. They threatened my life over an internet blog! That’s when it became personal for me and I have been trying to help their victims as much as I can ever since. My guess is that Michelle here is actually someone from Global Escapes. Either that or she is incredibly gullible. If you do a google search of Global Escapes you will find many websites with glowing reports of how wonderful their trips were and how much money they saved with Global Escapes. Each one written almost exactly like the last, in the same style. Last year a guy who got ripped off by them did an IP trace on all of those sites and found that they were all coming from the same IP address. Global Escapes is planting positive posts all over the place. There is not one “real” happy custom in existence. Global Escapes trip prices are more than the normal retail price for the same trip booked at a real travel agency. Who would be happy with that after dropping 3 grand to save money? What they do doesn’t even qualify as a bad deal, it is just pure theft. Over the last 2+ years I have been contacted by over 50 people who have been taken by these crooks. If only these people could get organized and start a class action lawsuit. I personally think it would be a slam dunk and may even put some of these people in prison. With just a little digging online I learned that they have operations set up all over the country. BBB complaints have been stacking up in Minnesota, Texas, Connecticut, Colorado, Florida and so on. All of these operations will move and change names frequently but they all have one thing in common. That is a company called CERTS INC and it’s based in Lakeland Florida. This is the company that is supposed to pay out the “free prizes” that they offer for sitting through a presentation. I looked it up and those trips are only worth $112, and yet people are paying $199 in tax for these “free trips”. Ouch! I’m not sure if CERTS is like the headquarters for these travel scammers or if they just buy these fake prizes from them, but it is strange that so many seemingly unaffiliated branches of Global Escapes have opened all across the nation and they all use CERTS. The owners of CERTS have been under investigation by the National BBB president for years. They apparently got their start running scams on retirees in Florida. Many of their ex-partners have already been indicted. I think CERTS INC is the headquarters for Global Escapes, Great Escapes, Sun Tree, or whatever other name a branch has changed too. I think they use these branches as a shield, and claim no affiliation. That’s how they get away with it. If one branch goes down, it’s no big deal the whole operation. If you have been taken by these crooks, don’t let them get away with it. Call your Attorney General, the national BBB, and a lawyer. Start a class action lawsuit. They have broken the law, it can be proven, and you can get your money back. Somebody has to stand up and put these fools out of business. It might as well be you.
We bought one of the packages and it included $300 worth of free gas. First surprise is that you must buy $100 each month and then you will receive $25 back. We started the process in August, 2008 and have diligently sent in the receipts each month including Jan, 2009. Well guess what? No money. We have sent numorous emails, phone calls to global escapes and no money. This entire process is a rip off. On the few occassions we have tried to book a condo or hotel, we were able to get a similar rate just through AAA or AARP.
Shame on us for being so dumb. It was just that it looked good. Not a time share is their main thrust. Well, that is true. This is just a scam, not a time share
FIRST HELLO TO ALL OF US ( SUCKERS) THIS WEEKEND I AM GOING DOWN TO WHERE THE COMPANY WAS WITH THE T.V STATION, AND IF I CANT GET HEARD THERE , I WILL GO TO OUR STATE CAPITOL AND PROTEST FOR OUR MONEY BACK ALONG WITH OUR DIGNITY. ANY ONE WANTING TO JOIN ARE MORE THEN WELCOME, THAT AUSTIN TEXAS THIS SUNDAY 22ND AFTER I GO TO THE OFFICE, AS IF WE CAN GET OUR MONEY WAISTED, I JUST CALLED THE 800 # AND THEY REPLYED NICELY THAT THEY HAD NO AFFILIATEION ( OKAY I CANT SPELL WHEN IAM ANGRY) AND TEXAS IS THE BIGGEST STATE SO FAR. MY BEST TO EVERYONE AND HOPEFULLY WE WILL FIND THEM AND JUSTICE WILL BE DONE.
THANKYOU FOR YOUR TIME.
CHERYL
I JUST WROTE ONE
all this negitive information is true. how do you go about getting even with these bastards?
You are right about the gasoline. Same here for us. I sent in receipts, but I did finally get only $75 in Visa Gift Cards when it was supposed to be $350, but it took forever to only get that.
I also wish I would have done a little more research.
On the free trip to Mexico which we supposedly had WON in a drawing, you are limited to when you can go and they ask for a $100 deposit which supposedly you will get back at the CONDO. Well, with everything that is happening in Mexico, we are not going.
We also supposedly received two free airline tickets, but, once again, they tell you when and where.
We have used them for hotels stays, but we probably could have booked them just as cheap thru AAA or AARP.
Very disappointing and I am the one that talked my husband into this!
these people will not stop calling me,they are now saying they will accept a target card,i thought it was a walmart drawing, red flag number 1,theyre were many more..do not give them any info
These guys are crooks and we have filed a complaint with the FL, TX and MN Attorney General. We have received replys from FL and MN. I saw somewhere that they have filed for bankruptcy. If that is true I got a feeling all of us suckers are out of luck.
Unfortunately their website is still active so I suspect they’ll continue to bilk people out of money.
Yep, same here. But it gets worse. They also offer fianncing througha a company called Monterrey Financial. If you borrow the money to pay for the “package”, Monterrey Financial will hound you mercilessly until the balance is paid with threats to ruin your credit rating if they don’t get their money. They claim no actual affiliation with Global Escapes. Texas’s AG filed a lawsuit in April of 2009, but no new information since then.
Here is a craigslist ad under barter that I found and posted links to your site stating that this Global Escapes is a scam and not to respond to this idiot.

Hey, has anyone heard anything else about the Global Escapes lawsuits? I just heard about it and am curious about seeing if I can get me money back.
I don’t know what you cheap ass people are complaining for. Maybe, you got shitty service because you are shitty people. I’ve been an owner of their program since 2005 and my family and I love it. I have stayed in short notice condos (299), long notice condos (799-1299). We’ve even taken one of the Redhot Getaways. Sure, you have to pay the 199 maintenance fee. All clubs have them etc…. If you haven’t enjoyed it; it may be because your not the enjoying type. Maybe, your just a person that rather complain than having fun. They have even partnered me with a buddy company of theirs before; when they could’nt accomodate my travel schedule and things worked out perfect. Maybe, you complaining people might want to reevaluate how you are perceived to others and how you come off to others. Maybe, your plans and enteractions with others might be a little more pleasant and enjoyable. (good day and good night)
Hey Tory, thanks for the feedback but you might want to simmer down a bit. Coming in and acting like it’s impossible that GE has done anyone wrong simply because your experience with them was good does nothing more than confirm your lack of rational thought. I’m glad you have enjoyed your time with GE as I’m sure many others out there would love to be able to say the same thing. The bottom line though is that GE utilized many tactics that just about anyone could classify as shady in an effort to “earn” my business. I have to wonder why. If their products and services are so stellar, wouldn’t I just naturally find my way to them? I’m thinking yes…
I joined G.E. approx. 7 years ago. At the time of joining, we also won a free trip. Since then, we have been unable to get either the free trip, or try to to take a trip thru G.E. Nothing has ever been available at a location we wished to go to. What they have to offer is more expensive than what i can find on my own, this assumes you can even find a trip thru them. Our free trip was not a free trip. It would of cost more than paying for a trip thru a legitimate travel agency. The $5000 i paid, plus the annual fees is out the window. Now that i have stopped paying the annual fee, they are threatening to turn my past due amount in to a collection agency. I chalk this BIG mistake up to my own ignorance for not checking them out more thoroughly before i joined. Don’t even consider this company as being legitimate, they are the farthest from it. They are a SCAM operation!!!
My parents purchased this software from GE as well. After paying out over $6k the only benefit has been reduced hotel rates that are really nominal. The condos advertised to my parents when they were cornered into purchasing this software were described as practically five star rating. Everything I have seen seems like an efficiency built and never upgraded since 1982. They called my parents demanding to pay a monthly maintenance fee of $160. Finally after a few months my mom simply refused to pay any more to this scam. We are in SATX, are there any class action law suits pending that we can jump in on? Any advice?
